Confidence in Obama reaches new low, Washington Post-ABC News poll finds By Dan Balz and Jon Cohen Washington Post Staff Writer Tuesday, July 13, 2010; A01 Public confidence in President Obama has hit a new low, according to the latest Washington Post-ABC News poll. Four months before midterm elections that will define the second half of his term, nearly six in 10 voters say they lack faith in the president to make the right decisions for the country, and a clear majority once again disapproves of how he is dealing with the economy. Regard for Obama is still higher than it is for members of Congress, but the gap has narrowed. About seven in 10 registered voters say they lack confidence in Democratic lawmakers and a similar proportion say so of Republican lawmakers. Overall, more than a third of voters polled -- 36 percent -- say they have no confidence or only some confidence in the president, congressional Democrats and congressional Republicans..... |

Pelosi Paying $18K a Month for New San Francisco Office
Last fall, Speaker Nancy Pelosi moved her district office into the new federal building in San Francisco. The move quadrupled the rent she pays, and her new $18,736 monthly bill is almost double the next-highest rental paid by a Member of the House. A database assembled by the Sunlight Foundation in cooperation with Roll Call provides new insight into Congressional spending on district office rents. Not surprisingly, Members from large urban districts with the highest property values are paying the most for district office rental, particularly New YorkŠarea Members. FAA under pressure to open US skies to drones WASHINGTON (AP) - Unmanned aircraft have proved their usefulness and reliability in the war zones of Afghanistan and Iraq. Now the pressure's on to allow them in the skies over the United States. The Federal Aviation Administration has been asked to issue flying rights for a range of pilotless planes to carry out civilian and law-enforcement functions but has been hesitant to act. Officials are worried that they might plow into airliners, cargo planes and corporate jets that zoom around at high altitudes, or helicopters and hot air balloons that fly as low as a few hundred feet off the ground. On top of that, these pilotless aircraft come in a variety of sizes. Some are as big as a small airliner, others the size of a backpack. |

Alexander Cockburn: Young Americans have given up watching the news. It’s too depressing It's the worst of times. America is plunging back into Depression. Only one out of every two Americans of working age has a job. Forty years ago that would have been okay. Dad went to the factory. Mom stayed at home to mind the kids. These days, just to keep the show on the road, mom and pop both work and the kids go to daycare. Start looking for work now and on average it will take till next April for you to find something. Across the last two months, more than a million Americans simply gave up seeking employment, even as benefits are running out. Ironically, if you quit looking for work you count as officially "discouraged", and don't figure in the official unemployment stats, which is the only reason that number hasn't shot up to record highs. |

Dr. Joseph Mercola Stresses Artificial Sweetener Killing Americans July 12, 2010 Aspartame: The Pentagon listed it as a biochemical warfare agent, and the FDA gave its approval as a sweetener used in over 6,000 foods. Its producers, Ajinomoto, have rebranded the artificial sweetener several times (most recently dubbed “AminoSweet”) in an effort to advertise it as a natural, harmless substance. Nonetheless there have been over 10,000 official complaints to the FDA about aspartame reactions. Dr. Joseph Mercola delves into the dangers of “America’s Deadliest Sweetener” in an article for the Huffington Post. The most common symptoms of aspartame overdose include headaches, mood alterations, and gastrointestinal symptoms. However side effects of the toxic sweetener can also mimic the following conditions: multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer’s disease, arthritis, chronic fatigue syndrome, panic disorder, lupus, birth defects, Lyme disease, Parkinson’s disease, fibromyalgia, multiple chemical sensitivity, attention deficit disorder, and lymphoma (just to name a few). Dr. Mercola also warns of the dangers of diet sodas and low-calorie foods: “Drinking diet soda increases your risk of metabolic syndrome, and may double your risk of obesity...... |

Historian warns of sudden collapse of American ‘empire’ by Brent Gardner-Smith, Aspen Daily News Staff Writer Tuesday, July 6, 2010
Harvard professor and prolific author Niall Ferguson opened the 2010 Aspen Ideas Festival Monday with a stark warning about the increasing prospect of the American “empire” suddenly collapsing due to the country’s rising debt level. “I think this is a problem that is going to go live really soon,” Ferguson said. “In that sense, I mean within the next two years. Because the whole thing, fiscally and other ways, is very near the edge of chaos. And we’ve seen already in Greece what happens when the bond market loses faith in your fiscal policy.” Ferguson said empires — such as the former Soviet Union and the Roman empire — can collapse quite quickly and the tipping point is often when the cost of servicing an empire’s debt is larger than the cost of its defense budget. |

Gulf Crisis Exposes Failures of Centralized Power Brian Roberts Campaign for Liberty July 13, 2010 Obama, the great centralizer, recently stated that he was looking for the right ass to kick. With this now famous statement he hoped to divert public attention from the failures of centralized power and begin to set a public mood against the oil industry and for expanded regulation and taxation. Other recent federal actions and statements make it painfully obvious that the federal government has zero interest in backing any plan to clean up the gulf in a timely manner. While the crisis demands a federal response to help with stopping the leak and cleaning up the gulf, the ultimate goal of this administration is centralization of power. The following responses to the gulf crisis are effective methods in use today by Obama’s government to further this goal: * Present false arguments for centralized power; ignoring the disastrous role regulation played in creating the crisis * Attack and blackmail BP, and thus the oil industry as a whole, for a crisis created by faulty regulation that forced bad decisions * Further the crisis by refusing to help clean up the disaster and hindering state and private action * Leverage the emotional and financial impact on states and individuals to create a misguided street-level demand to pass the climate bill, giving more power to the feds |
