What Are Michael Benoit's Positions?

ABORTION

It is my belief that no one wants to have the situation arise where a woman becomes pregnant and does not wish to give birth. Whether you classify yourself as "pro life" or "pro choice," I am sure that you would rather a woman never feel obliged to have an abortion in the first place. There can be no denial that unwanted pregnancies have been around since the beginning of time. It is my contention that the problem has become exacerbated by government. I can not find in the Constitution where the federal government has any authority in this area, and therefore conclude that it should be left to the states. I also think that if we did not have the government interceding into the economics of our lives by paying for abortions or children born out of wedlock, we would have a dramatic reduction in the numbers of abortions.

CRIME

My position on crime is this: almost all crime is local and therefore under jurisdiction of state and local government. The only federal crimes should consist of violations against those powers delegated to the federal government, and that does not include those areas reserved to the state jurisdiction. Examples of areas that the federal government should not criminalize include drugs, juvenile justice, and gun control legislation. These things are under state control. Needless to say, if there is no victim, there is no crime. Of course, the biggest crime in this country today is carried out by the federal government. I speak of trillion dollars of theft against the hard working people of this country for Marxist redistribution purposes.

DRUG WAR

I am against the Government telling people what to do with their own bodies. Even though I don’t even take aspirin, I do not believe I have the right to tell others they can’t. The drug war reminds me of the prohibition against alcohol and the crime and corruption wave that swept the country because of it. I know that the best deterrent against using drugs are the negative consequences it brings to an individual's ability to lead a viable existence. However, the government intercedes in that also by giving disability payments to drug addicts. This is a case where the cure is worse than the disease. The cost, the lost rights, and the results prove the war to be a catastrophe. This war has caused misery far beyond what use could do.

CAMPAIGN FINANCE REFORM

I believe that one should be able to pledge and contribute their life, fortune and sacred honor to the cause of liberty. The campaign finance laws do not work, like most government prohibitions. All they do is help those in power to remain in power. The corrupt two major parties allow each other to get away with their transgressions anyway--sort of a quid pro quo. Meanwhile, the little freedom seekers like myself have to jump through all kinds of bureaucratic red tape just because we raise over five thousand dollars, while an incumbent can get tens of thousands of dollars of free mailings to the constituencies for self promotion. No thanks! No more five-year plans to reform anything. Let individuals contribute whatever they want.

TAXES

We all know that the government needs to tax people to pay for the cost of government. I have no problem with that. However, we should only be asked to pay for a government which secures our inalienable rights, not one that plunders them. We should never sanction any form of taxation that is designed to transfer wealth, and enslave one group for the benefit of another. Any tax system which turns one citizen into a slave, and allows another to become a parasite, should never be allowed. The federal government can run on 20 percent of what it now takes from the hardworking people of this country. It can do that on excises, tariffs and impost quite well. The hideous Marxist income tax is not a lawful tax no matter what you think of the 16th Amendment. It certainly did not authorize a system of slavery that nullifies your rights.

STATES' RIGHTS

The federal government was set up to be our foreign government, and the state and local governments to be our domestic governments. Think of it this way: the federal government is to deal with all those issues, foreign to the state jurisdiction, military, post offices, coinage, and relations with other countries, which would include handling disputes between the states. That is pretty much the sum of it. Each state is guaranteed a Republican form of self-government.

SOCIAL SECURITY

It should be clear to most that this so-called retirement system is doomed to failure. Of course, the insidious nature of the beast led us to believe it would be a great system to help the aged. It did do this for the first, second and even third generations of elderly people. However, like any Ponzi scheme, it eventually breaks down and the last people in will lose out. We were told that the money would go into a trust fund and be paid back to us out of the same. Well, to be Constitutional, the taxes had to be collected for the General fund as any other tax and Congress always appropriates from current revenue to pay current Social Security benefits. There never was any trust fund. The program is nothing more than a wealth transfer. Harry Browne’s book titled Why Government Doesn’t Work lays out a solution to this debacle.

BORDER WAR

I know of only one way to win a war, and that is to destroy the enemy outright. Of course, we should not be at war with a people who are trying to find work to feed their families. Maybe if we were to stop supporting a corrupt Mexican government with 31 billion dollar bailouts, we would not have so many Mexican citizens attempting to come here for work. The Berlin Wall project is a failure. It is another pouring of money down a rat hole project. It is causing those who seek work to suffer loss of life while enriching the coyotes who smuggle them. The people the Border Patrol catch today make it across tomorrow. The Americans who have property along the border with Mexico have lost all their property rights over this war. I personally find it offensive to have Federal agents peering into my vehicle as I travel a state highway 80 miles from the border. If this war does anything, it keeps the illegal aliens here. It is much more difficult for them to return to the U.S. so they just stay here instead of going home. All we have to do to solve this problem is to allow for more work visas for those who come looking for work. The employers would have more legal workers to choose from so they will stop hiring illegal workers. No free health care, education or welfare.

GUNS

Democrats and Republicans argue about how much of your inalienable right to keep and bear arms they shall infringe upon. People have the right to defend themselves with whatever tool is also available to the attacker. The only way to guarantee that we never live under a Hitler, Mao, Stalin or Pol Pot is to make sure we always retain our right to keep and bear arms. To paraphrase Thomas Jefferson: the strongest reason to keep and bear arms is to be able to one day take them up against tyranny in government. I second that motion. All in favor, say Aye.

FOREIGN POLICY

This is simple: we should stay out of the sovereign affairs and petty squabbles of other nations. Do not take American taxpayer dollars to fund foreign charity. Let the individual citizens decide which organizations to support and which products and services to purchase. Bring American troops home; we should quit policing the world and withdraw from the Marxist U.N.

MILITARY

Tread lightly, but carry a big stick. I want to see the United States armed forces prepared to crush any enemy who initiates or attempts to initiate force against U.S. territory, rather than branching out around the globe to "protect" some foggy notion of a vital national interest. We must concentrate on building a strong defense and abandon further military offense. Yes, it is time for a "Star Wars" type missile defense and other state-of-the-art defensive measures. I believe we could cut billions from the military budget by bringing our troops home and still increase military pay so that our finest stay that way.

EDUCATION

The Federal Government has no business in the education of our children. In fact, by getting involved in it, those politicians are violating the Constitution they took an oath to uphold. It makes no sense to rob money from the citizens, send it to D.C., and then send some of it back and call it a grant to the states for education. Let's face the facts: this is a siphon, and a farce. I would like to see the income tax abolished, leaving the money with those who have earned it. I believe more people would choose alternatives for their children. I believe if we are to maintain quality education, we must have more private competition!

NATIONAL DEBT

The national debt is currently over NINE TRILLION DOLLARS! If it is left to fester it will eventually collapse our economy. This is a legacy of slavery we will leave our children. It must be eliminated, and it should be done by selling off federal assets, not by taxation. You cannot show me one instance of an individual, family, or government that continued to spend more than they take in that did not eventually go bankrupt.

HEALTH CARE

I think that our health would improve dramatically if we were not split into two factions: those whose backs are being broken to carry those whose limbs have atrophied by getting a free ride. The U.S. is home to the most technologically advanced health care because the U.S. continues to allow the marketplace to exert a measure of innovative and creative force in the health care industry. Once again, it is not the business of the federal government to be involved in this area, just as it is not their job to feed us. Health care should be managed by the private marketplace and private charity, not the federal government.
